Before the hard day’s work, the lady in charge asked me if I would like to take a ride to the place where all the kids were at school at the moment, so of course I agreed and off we went. What I saw brought a tear to my eye. We pulled into a dusty space with nothing but to cargo containers next to each other. There was a door on the side and as we walked in I saw that this in fact was the class room for the kids. 55 students all smiling up at me as the brave and kind teachers look after and teach them and feed them while their parents work or look for work. I breaks my heart but also makes me feel that what I am doing is making a huge difference. What it has done has made it that I want to come back again and again and I would urge you to do the same.
That really inspired me and I was ready to tackle the work site. I could see the people who were with me were also inspired. It was something that had ignited inside of us, a proudly South African Passion to help those less fortunate than us. I found that although the work was hard, I had this drive, I had a purpose and I knew I would be making those kids lives better. Carrying brick, pushing wheel barrows and hosing cement, it really was a lot of work, but it was good to see that we were making a real difference to this country. I had my yaktrax safety shoes and snickers workwear supplied to me by the social group and lunch was provided. Overall it was a great experience and it made me really feel as though I was putting my hand up in making South Africa a better place to live.
